Sleep Cycle Alarm for iPhone

SO - I mentioned a couple of days ago that John convinced me to buy the Sleep Cycle app for the iPhone so here is my review on it after using it for a few nights.

John and I are both those people who set our alarm for like an hour before we actually have to get up and then we hit snooze every 9 minutes until we actually have to get up. The morning is the worst part of my day because I hate getting out of bed. Once I'm out of bed, I'm fine. It's the getting out from under the covers part that kills me.

So, John said he had been reading reviews about this app that is supposed to help you wake up easier because it wakes you up when you aren't in your deepest sleep. Now, in my head I'm thinking, how in the heck can the iPhone know when you are in your deepest sleep??

Who knows if it actually does or not, but $0.99 later, I have the app. And now to the point...
basically you first tell the app what the latest time it is that you want to get up. Then it takes 30 minutes before that and that's the earliest it will tell you to get up. You do a test with the phone/app to see which position is best in your bed to recognize your movements and then you're ready to set your alarm for the night. What happens is, it recognizes by your movements what stage of sleep you are in. Apparently your movements can tell the phone this?! So, if you're in a really deep sleep at that 3o minute mark it's not going to wake you up. It's going to wait until you start moving into your lighter sleep stages. If it gets to the time where you absolutely HAVE to wake up and you're still in the deep sleep, it's going to wake you up. You can still "hit" snooze if it wakes you up earlier than the time you have to get up, but it's a random snooze time, usually just 2 minutes or so, so you don't go back into that deep sleep. "Hit" is in quotes because all you have to do is move the iPhone and it snoozes.

So, do I think it works? I really don't know. I do wake up feeling more refreshed and don't have the urge to hit snooze like I have in the past. But, that might just be me hoping it's working so I don't feel like I wasted my $0.99! ;)

Some cons about the app:
- Once you set the alarm, you can't use your phone anymore. It's not IOS4 (is that the right term?) compatible so it can't run in the background. Which means if you hit the home button at all, it shuts the alarm off.
-The phone has to be in the bed with you charging. I have a docking station so I can't use that. Luckily my wall outlet is close enough to the bed where it can reach.
-The cats sleep with us so if it is actually registering movements, it could be registering theirs. They sleep right next to me on the edge of the bed which is very close to where the phone is.

Screen shots of my statistics for 3 nights...

What the screen looks like when you set the alarm...

Overall after a few nights of use, I'm still kind of 50/50 on this thing. It's got good things going for it, but also some cons that I pointed out.

Does anybody else have this alarm on their iPhone?

When I was in middle school...

...my weekends were filled with sleepovers, school dances, and writing love notes to boys. Gosh, I know I was middle school about 15 years ago, but boy, how the times have changed....

Because of HIPAA and FERPA and all the other laws out there I can't say much about my job, but lately, I've been in major shock of some of the things I'm seeing come in my clinic during the day.

What's up with all the piercings? Ok, I've gotten used to seeing the nose piercing but the lip? And these kids are piercing EACH OTHERS ears/lips/nose, etc... WTH? I had a girl come in recently and her friend had pierced her cartilage and it was infected. I have to scare them and say "listen, your ear is going to FALL OFF if y'all keep doing that crap."

And these bracelets?

I know this is just "the trend" right now, but these kids will come in (even boys) with these bracelets all the way up their arm. It's probably gang related and I'm just too dumb to know it, but I just think it's weird!

And the skinny jeans... oh don't get me started on the skinny jeans. Not really on girls so much, but on the boys.

I'm just not getting the whole rolled up skinny jean look on the guys.

And then there's the sagging. Luckily we have a dress code and the kids can't sag at school, but as soon as that bell rings, the pants are around the knees! GROSS.

My jaw nearly hit the ground when I saw this one the other day... Ya know how a lot of people are tattooing their wrists lately?

Well, apparently it has become cool to "tattoo" their boyfriend's name on their wrist. Except, they are not using ink, they are etching (for lack of a better term) the name in to their skin with a STAPLER! And they are doing it in class?! When I saw a girl with "Ricardo" scabbed on her wrist, I had to hide the shock on my face. Me being the nurse has to go in to a big spill about the risk of infection, and these kids could care less. We'll see how they like it when it gets infected ;)

And then there's the teen pregnancies.

I'm not gonna say much about this because I know there are circumstances. I know there are accidents. I know one of you reading this might be a teen mom or might have a sister who is a teen mom or know someone who is a teen mom. But, the stupidity of some of the girls is just mind boggling. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. There are so many free resources out there that I give them and yet they still don't take their pre-natal vitamins, still don't go get their ultrasounds, and never go for any pre-natal appointments. Ok, I'm off my soap box now :)

Are you a teacher in a middle school? If so, do you see the same things I do? This is crazy to me!

What Savanah's reading...

I finished reading both of Lauren Conrad's first books awhile ago and just bought Sugar and Spice, her 3rd novel, on iBooks. So far, so good! I loved The Hills and these are fun to kind of relate the books to the show and see what went on behind the scenes. If you loved the show and love Chicklit books, you should definitely pick these up for an easy read.

Here is the description from Amazon:

Sugar and Spice . . . Not everyone's nice.

Fresh from being betrayed by one of her closest friends, new reality-television celebrity Jane Roberts has learned a few lessons. Most important: know who to trust. And in Hollywood, that list is short.

Although the press is intent on creating a tabloid war between her and ex-friend/current-costar Madison Parker, Jane just wants to take control of her life. She’s started by swearing off guys and the drama that comes with them. But when her high school sweetheart Caleb and her unrequited L.A. crush Braden show up, both acting sweeter than ever, Jane has a hard time remembering her no-boys rule. . . .

Her best friend, Scarlett, has only one guy on her mind: her new boyfriend, Liam. The girl who once thought love was a four-letter word is now head over heels. The problem is, being on a hit reality show means hanging out with other guys on-camera, and Liam isn’t too happy with pretending to play a bit part in her love life.

Just when everything feels out of control, Jane makes a shocking discovery—one that changes everyone’s definition of “reality” forever.

In her deliciously entertaining novel, television star Lauren Conrad pulls back the curtain on young Hollywood and shows that sometimes the real drama is behind the scenes.

And these are a few other books that I've bought on iBooks and can't wait to read after I'm finished with Sugar and Spice:

Are there any books that you're reading that you love and want to recommend?

Weight Watchers Wednesday

I'm back for Weight Watchers Wednesday!

Here's my progress so far:

Week 4: Lost 1.6 lbs
Total lost since 12/26: 10 lbs

So, when I plugged in my weight to my Weight Watchers app on Sunday morning after weighing it, it had a warning pop up saying I'm losing weight to fast. "If you lose an average of 2 lbs a week over a 4 week period, it can cause health problems like anemia, heart irregularities, and loss of muscle mass."

HMPH - So, what do I do? I feel like I'm eating enough. In fact, this week, I felt like I ate too much. I usually eat all of my points every day, sometimes going over, but have never used all of the extra points Weight Watchers gives me for the week. Maybe I need to be using those?

Anyone else have this problem??

And thanks to Top 2 Tuesday yesterday, I made some delicious cupcakes last night...

Soda Cake Cupcakes

All you do is take one box of cake mix, one diet soda and 2 egg whites and mix together and bake according to the directions on the box, omitting the eggs and oil.

Add Cool Whip free to the cupcakes for the "icing" and you have a pretty healthy sweet treat!

For all you ladies doing weight watchers, guess what?! Only 2-3 points per cupcake, depending on how much Cool Whip you use :-P

Just a quick note to say...

Look what I found!!!

Thanks to Mrs. MFC for pointing me in the right direction, I finally found some of this EOS lip balm I've been looking for!

I picked up the LAST lemon drop and sweet mint flavor at Walgreen's today and I am in L-O-V-E <3

You must try these, FAST!

Top 2 Tuesday!

I love Taylor's topic today for Top 2 Tuesday - Top 2 Healthy Recipes and Snack Ideas!

This topic is PERFECT for me right now and I'm so excited to go through all the links and hopefully find some good recipes and snack ideas for John and I. Maybe I'll even find some other fellow bloggers who are doing weight watchers as well!

So, I posted about some of my new favorite snacks in my first Weight Watchers Wednesday Post. And in last weeks Weight Watchers Wednesday, I posted 3 of the recipes John and I had been eating that we love.

So, here's my top 2 favorite healthy snacks right now:

1. Strawberries and Splenda - A great way to satisfy my sweet tooth! Strawberries are 0 points and Splenda is 0 points for up to 3 Tbsp.

2. Apples and Cool Whip - another sweet tooth satisfier! I'm not sure if this combo is weird or not, but it's yummy! Apples are 0 points and the Cool Whip Free is 0 points for up to 3 Tbsp.

Now, my top 2 favorite healthy recipes right now: (these were posted last week, but they are still my Top 2)

1. Roasted Pork Tenderloin

Yields about 3 ounces per serving. Makes 8 servings
Total points: 3

2. Juicy Hamburgers

2 tsp minced garlic
1/2 tsp table salt

4 light rolls

3. Place burgers on hot griddle or grill and cook 5 minutes per side for medium (or longer to desired degree of doneness.)
4. Serve burgers on rolls with your favorite toppings (could affect points values)
Yields 1 burger per serving. Makes 4 servings

I've made a few changes to affect points - I don't use a bun. I just eat the meat and put 1/2 slice of 2% cheddar cheese and it's only 5 points instead. You can also add any veggies you want for 0 points.

Hopefully y'all enjoy these recipes and snacks!

Miscellany Monday

I'm back for Miscellany Monday!

Miscellany Monday @ lowercase letters

1. I'm super excited for the Bachelor tonight. I told myself I wasn't going to get sucked in this season, but I already am. Emily is my fav so far!

2. After seeing a lot of bloggers post about this new chapstick, I'm really wanting some. I've looked the last few times at the store, but can't find any :( Lemon is one of my favorite flavors so this just has to be fabulous.

3. I didn't think I would like American Idol this season without Simon, Ellen, or Kara but I actually think I like it better. Jennifer Lopez was just great and Steven Tyler (even though I'm not a big fan) really did a good job. I do think though that they let a bunch of people through who wouldn't have made it in the past seasons.

4. John convinced me to download this new alarm app on the iPhone clock called Sleep Cycle. I'm going to do a whole separate post about this because it's very interesting, but basically it can tell when you are in your deepest sleep so it doesn't wake up during that. More to come on that one.

5. 7 more weeks until Spring Break. :)

6. A few weeks ago on Miscellany Monday I mentioned that John was going to San Diego. Well, he booked me a ticket so I get to go too! Thanks to some frequent flier miles and his company paying for the hotel, we are basically going for free! Now we need suggestions on things to do...

7. I had another pretty good Weight Watchers week. Stay tuned for Weight Watchers Wednesday for the full scoop.

8. This weekend John and I are headed to DFW for my family's annual trip to the Ft. Worth Rodeo. I'm excited to get to put on my cowboy boots again! ;)

9. I'm excited for the Houston Rodeo again this year. The entertainers never disappoint and I reeeeally wanna see Miranda Lambert and Zach Brown Band this year. The only bad thing - they are both on week days the same week. I'm out for Spring Break that week, but John isn't. So, if anyone wants to join me, speak up! :)

10. I got the Josh Abbot Band CD for Christmas and I am LOVING this song...

That's it for my miscellany's today. I always end up with way more than planned :)

"See" y'all tomorrow!

Did you notice none of this was chicken? Everything thinks all you can eat is grilled chicken when you're on a diet, but that is NOT TRUE! John and I haven't eaten grilled chicken once since I started this plan.

Next week I will probably give some tips on eating out which is toughest part for me!
