A Week in Denver

What a whirlwind last week was!! I had a week long education session at the Nurse Family Partnership National Education Center in Denver. It's a required session that all nurses have to do before seeing clients on their own. While I learned alot, I also had some fun!!

John dropped me off at the airport last Sunday and I got to my hotel in Denver around 5pm. My hotel didn't have a restaurant or room service so I had to venture out and find food on my own...with no car! My hotel was in downtown so I was able to walk to the nearby 16th Street Mall for dinner at a little burger place and made a stop at 7-11 for Diet DP for the week! haha

{our sad I'm leaving for 6 days faces}

{Bye Houston}

{Southwest had this where you could track your flight from the air. Thought it was pretty cool}

{pretty mountains}

I was exhausted but could hardly sleep Sunday night (and every night!). I ended up waking up early Monday morning, but my class didn't start until 3pm. I had plenty of time for breakfast at the hotel, getting ready, lunch at Subway and of course blogging and watching TV.

I was so worried about meeting people in my class and having no one to eat lunch or dinner with during the week, but it turned out perfectly. Pretty much everyone in my class was staying at the same hotel so after class on Monday we all walked back together and a group of us walked down to 16th street and had dinner at Hard Rock Cafe.

Tuesday was the first full day of class and boyyyyy was it overwhelming. It all was. But as the week went on it all started to come together and make sense! Tuesday we went to lunch at a place called Wahoo's and I had the carnitas tacos. Very good!! There were people from all over the US in my class... Detroit, NYC, Myrtle Beach, Vegas, San Antonio, Indianapolis, Arkansas, Minneapolis, an Indian Reservation in Minnesota, Vermont, California, Charleston, Iowa... It was crazy to hear everyones different accents and everyones different stories about their NFP home visits so far!

Wednesday was freezing!! I of course only packed summer clothes! Luckily I brought a jacket, but my sandals didn't do a good job of keeping my feet warm in the cold rain! It was a long day of class again and then we went to The Tavern for lunch. I had an open faced pot roast sandwhich with sourdough bread, mashed potatoes, and onion straws and mmmmmm, it was best food I had there! Wednesday was the day I was completely overwhelmed I think with all the paperwork! They had us circle how we were feeling and I think everyone circled the same face as me! haha. Wednesday night I decided to stay in the hotel. I ordered from a local Italian place and had them deliver it to the room. I got in my PJ's early and called it an early night because I was so exhausted!

Thursday was another full day of class.... We went to a place called Steuben's for lunch. It always had a wait because it was on the DDD show on Food Network, but I have to say, I wasn't impressed. The mac and cheese was good, but the service was awful. Thursday night a group of us went to the Colorado Rockies Baseball game! This was seriously SO much fun and the best time I had the entire trip!!

{of course I had to have a Coors Light at Coors Field!}

{Keleigh from Vegas, Me, Andrea from Flint, Michigan}

{Aubrey from Des Moines and Mary from Detroit}

Friday was finally our last day of class. We went around the room and shared the #1 thing we took away from the week and there were alot of tears!! It was a long, overwhelming, tiring week, but we all learned so much and know that we are going to make a huge difference in a lot of peoples lives. We got out at Noon and the shuttle picked almost all of us up around 12:15 and we went to the airport! My plane left at 4:30 and I made it home to my hubby and kitties around 8pm!

{Friday the fog and clouds cleared up and you could see the mountains from the conference room!}

I was SO glad to be home!! I don't think I'll ever go back to Denver because of the high altitude. I just never got used to it while I was there. My stomach was uneasy the whole time I was there, I couldn't sleep and my skin was almost raw it was so dry. The only good thing- really good hair days! :)

One of the days in the training, they showed us a You Tube Video of clients and Nurse Home Visitors and their stories. It intrigued me and I went to You Tube and found all sorts of videos that different agencies had put together for NFP. I found this one and it brought tears to my eyes. I am so excited about the journey I'm about to start with NFP....

I start with my first 3 clients this week on my own! Wish me luck!! :)

I'm so glad you had such a good trip!!! It's hard having to go to a brand new city all on your own, but it sounds like you really had a great time although I know you're happy to be home :)

Good luck this week! I was so dried out when I went to Denver a few years ago. Too used to the Houston humidity! That's awesome y'all got to fit in a baseball game! :)

We're so low altitude down here I get the same way when I travel to certain places. Ugh! The game was a good idea and looked like so much fun! Glad it was a successful trip.

I actually love traveling on my own! And I've never been to Denver, but it's on my list. When I finally get there, I'll have to come back to this post for your restaurant recommendations! Glad it was a good trip for you-- this job really sounds so great. :)
